I really enjoyed reading a historical fiction book because I hardly read historical fiction books so it was nice thing to try out. When Sarny was freed by confederate soldiers she had one goal only, that was to find her kids from a slave owner.

Real life isn't like that. Slavery was cruel like that; splitting mother from child without remorse. Start by marking “Sarny: A life Remembered” as Want to Read: Laura is a wealthy white person who they alas meet along their journey and she helps them out. Nightjohn, because he sacrificed freedom to give more to others in bondage. The story and legacy of the enigmatic leader of the notorious 1831 homicidal slave revolt in Virginia, along with reviews of works about him, are explored; twentieth century civil rights discussed and cultural relativism mentioned. Paulsen writes, "Except for variations in time and character identification and placement, the events written in this story are true and actually happened." That first night, Nightjohn teaches Sarny the letter A, and the sounds that go with it. And then, some who read and some who didn’t, but just listened to the ones who read, some started to run. This book challenged my thoughts and made me think about racism today. The novel teaches you life during the civil war. While I liked the characters and storyline, it was a bit too gory for me. I didn't like the movie Night john.

Sarny is a 12-year-old slave girl owned by a cruel master. I look forward to reading more about Sarny as well as other Paulsen books. It was full of pain and suffering, and being dunked into this time period was not an enjoyable experience. I definitely enjoyed reading it. In the plantation They were not allowed to be able to write and read because the slaves were not aloud to be able to be like all the white people.

I recommend this book to anybody who wants to take a break from reading the books they always read and read this book. I was excited to follow two freed slaves as one of them searches for her still-sold children. When Sarny's master is killed, she becomes free, and she takes up the tedious task of hunting for her children. When the master catches her writing it in the dirt, he begins his tirade of cruelty, in search of the one who taught her to read.

I think it was ok as a stand alone. I felt very connected and engaged in the book every second I was reading it. Then, midway through, the freed slaves meet an extravagantly rich white woman who solves all of their problems. But, it also touched me and was very meaningful. I would recommend this book to 7th graders because it was easy to read and understand and it was a great historical fiction book.Sarny: A Life Remembered is about a women named Sarny who lives in the time period were slavery was starting to end. A man who has struggled personally has conflicts with his upwardly mobile lawyer brother and well to-do fiancee and is reluctantly to be the best man at their wedding.

Nightjohn is a 1996 American television film directed by Charles Burnett. I was so on board with the first half of this story. Gary Paulsen's 'Nightjohn' is a middle grade/young adult novel about a twelve-year-old girl in the time of slavery in the American South. January 1st 1995 This story tells one girl's nightmare of living on a slavery plantation. I thought this book would be great to read in my future classroom.
