High School educational programs on laws that impact young adults.My years of speaking to students in our schools and my work with the Mock Trial teams has taught me that our young people are often ignorant of serious legal issues that could affect them as juveniles and as adults. Successful programs can help save lives, prevent individuals from becoming repeat offenders in court cases and prevent many members of the public from becoming victims of criminal activity. Employment opportunities are often a big part of the problem faced by offenders working to deal with drug dependency and mental health issues. Lake County Juvenile Court and the Mentor Municipal Court are among courts that have implemented successful programs of these kinds. I would like to research the potential for these special dockets in the General Division to help deal with the rise in drug abuse crimes and mental health driven activity.
These specialized court dockets maintain a greater “hands on” approach by the Court to address and monitor the offender’s conduct with the goal of rehabilitation.
