where does the book once take place

There's a lot of tough girl posturing in this novel and the mc has obvious PTSD (on the page) and trauma because of her time at this monster's hands. Details I know. Now this girl has been through some serious shit. Can't wait to read the next one. I read a lot of the FBI/detective series books and they all sort of blend together. Throughout the book, James contended that faith produces authentic deeds. That aside, I found the other characters a little flat and predictable, all of them playing out their assigned roles without much passion or thought.

I really enjoyed the first book in the Riley Paige Mystery series. No one, FBI agent or not, would get away with acting like that. It helps that Steveston is such a gorgeous little village with friendly people and great businesses, making it just a nice place to be in general, even without the Once connection. Yikes! It's narrated by a woman with a British accent, overly dramatic, and making U.S. FBI agents and citizens sound like a Monty Python skit. First, there is no way Riley would be allowed to return to work in that condition. Bodies of women are turning up, each killed in monstrous ways. I got that the main character was under duress but her actions seemed kind of ridiculous toward the end and the red herrings seemed to be more tossed silly nilly into the story rather than being more woven into the plot. I didn't really connect to the main character or her relationship with her partner or her daughter, and I most definitely should have. I find it scary of her capabilities, but at the same time I’m in awe of her abilities. The writing was tight and the action kept on coming. I just wish there was at least one character I could like, or sympathise with, or at the very least be surprised by. She also gets drunk and nearly od's and it's her teenage daughter who has to pour out the alcohol and nurse her through the hangover. Yikes! This book is difficult to rate because I thought it was really well-plotted and rather amateurishly written. A fast paced gripping thriller.
