“Bayou Maharajah” attempts to dissect the myths that surrounded the late musician. He plaid classical, blues, gospel, jazz and other genres, but the connections he made on the keyboard remain original, idiosyncratic.

Lily Keber’s documentary about New Orleans piano virtuoso James Booker, Bayou Maharajah, will be available for streaming on Netflix starting this Thursday, September 1.The popular web-based streaming platform will undoubtedly spur interest in the fascinating film, which made its festival debut three years ago and was first released on DVD this June.

I especially love his rendition of Irene because it showcases his prodigal musical talents and his personality, (in the spoken intro). Bayou Maharajah explores the life and music of New Orleans piano legend James Booker. Booker was a genius who defied categorization, and the great performances and interviews in this film reveal aspects never before revealed. It takes account of his troubled psyche and covers plenty of the wild-man anecdotes, but pays close attention to the musicianship.
