These papers were written primarily by students and provide critical analysis of Jacob's Room by Virginia Woolf.

Jacob's Room (Oxford World's Classics)

I am hoping to read 'to the lighthouse' next.

Set in the halcyon days of pre-World War I innocence, Virginia Woolf's third novel follows the progress of a young man as he moves from adolescence to adulthood in a hazy rite of passage.

If you are a person who is concerned with the story then Virginia Woolf is probably not for you. If you haven't yet read any Virginia Woolf, start with To the Lighthouse or Mrs Dalloway.

Jacob's Room is VW's third novel (1922) and marks her departure from naturalism to modernism.

He's heavily bandaged.

His doctor tries to take him out of hospital. It feels like Woolf is still figuring out how to use her round-about style to the best advantage of the novel, and it stumbles at times.

Wandering through the windswept shores of Cornwall to the sun-scorched landscape of Greece, his character is revealed in a stream of loosely related incidents, thoughts, and impressions.

Jacob himself is not particularly likeable, but I was thrilled to have experienced the gorgeous prose. Subtle and delicate. I don't like to stop reading a book once I've started but this book really tested me.

Jacob insists he's alive. Personally, I love it, others say it's not one of Woolf's best. Modern in the best sense of the word. His character is not as developed as characters in her later novels, and I left the book without a true connection to the main character.

Don't expect racy page turners but just wonderful language that reads like exquisite music.

From his boyhood on the windswept shores of Cornwall to his days as a student at Cambridge, his elusive, chameleon-like character is gradually revealed in a stream of loosely related incidents and impressions: whether through his mother's letters, his friend's conversations, or the thoughts of the women who adore him. The dilemma discussed by Woolf is so conspicuous yet so evasive.

It's certainly not a book for everyone, there's not much in way of plot and you're given a sense of a character only by the characters absence, through anecdotes of other people. His development is traced through the eyes of characters he meets, and his perceptions on the world around him. It hangs in a balance where it is difficult for Jacob to settle down and appreciate what he must. Unfortunately the kindle edition being sold here is missing inset quotes/songs/poems from the characters so sometimes you might get

A beautiful investigation of desire, memory, character and place.

A Room of One's Own-Original Edition(Annotated)

A must read. The Years (Vintage Classics Woolf Series)

In my opinion, though, I think her diaries are her best work and well worth seeking out. This is the first time I have read Virginia Woolf and seriously I'm a fan. A must read Woolf!

A great read.

possibly including full books or essays about Virginia Woolf written by other authors featured on this site. Jacob Flanders is a young man passing from adolescence to adulthood in a hazy rite of passage.

The Voyage Out (Oxford World's Classics)

I would reccomend Mrs. Dalloway as an introduction to Woolf, but for anyone who is still interested after Mrs. Dalloway this is a good investment of time.
