He lived from 1890 - 1964 and is most remembered and renowned for his extensive body of still life paintings (called natura morta in Italian). At 17 he enrolled at the city's Accademia di Belle Arti (Academy of Fine Arts) where he taught himself the art of etching by studying reference books on Rembrandt. When asked who had influenced his early development as an artist, Morandi cited Cézanne and the early Cubists, along with Piero della Francesca, Masaccio, Uccello, and Giotto. He attends the Accademia di Belle Arti in Bologna from 1907 to 1913. He used a limited palette of muted, earthy colors, echoing the frescoes by Giotto he so admired.
